Jekyll Island

The drive up the Jekyll Island took us through huge areas of coastal grass flats.  When we finally got out to the island, we were greeted with a $10 access fee.  We needed to pick up a few things at the grocery store, so whipped out our phones to find what was on the island – not much.  After not trusting GoogleMaps a few times as to the location of the little IGA, we realized that yes, the grocery store was located in a complex of trailers that resembled portable classrooms parked along the beach.  Most of the local businesses were temporarily moved there while some mega shopping complex/convention center was being built.  We didn’t like this place already. Fort Clinch

With Jacksonville behind us, we continued up the coast towards our next stop, Fort Clinch.  Aside from knowing that we wanted to drive the Outer Banks eventually, we never really planned out a route or stops along the way.  Rather, we’d pull up GoogleMaps and look for areas of green, which are usually either parks or golf courses.  That’s how we found Hanna park, Fort Clinch, and many other that we haven’t yet written about (we are running a backlog of about a month.)  Anyhow, along our drive to Fort Clinch, we noticed just such an area, and then saw a sign for it – Kingsley Plantation. On to St. Augustine…make that Jacksonville

The next place that we wanted to go was just up the coast – St. Augustine. Along the way, we stopped for lunch at Da Kine Diegos in Satellite Beach – a little burrito joint that we’ve been to many times before. After gorging ourselves on overstuffed burritos served up by the local surfer kids, we headed to Camping World in Cocoa Beach to pick up a propane hose adapter that we needed for our grill. From there, we headed to Anastasia State Park. We tried to get a walk-up site, but they were completely booked. The next planned stop after Anastasia was Hanna Park in Jacksonville, so we continued up the road, as we knew that they had availability. Let’s do this, Sebastian

Though we intended to have a shakedown trip in the campervan somewhere close to home to figure out the things we needed and those we didn’t, we never made it happen.  So, our first night sleeping in old Oscar (Cooper’s other name for the campervan) was all-in at Sebastian Inlet.  We slept great despite a decent decline – the first of our many uneven campsites. Setting Sail

Monday, April 21, was the target date to hit the road.  Jennifer actually wanted to get out the Saturday before, but we knew it wouldn’t really be possible.  The campervan (as Cooper calls it) had already been sitting in our backyard for over a month at that point.  We were ready to go, if only all of the packing and little details were taken care of. After countless orders from Amazon, getting private insurance, a home security system, dealing with the last minute curveball of our renters wanting to get out of their lease and us subsequently deciding to sell the rental house, the minor detail of quitting our jobs, and nonstop packing…we missed our departure date.  Certainly we’d be ready the next day.
